Along the Interstate 70 and 57 intersection in Effingham, Illinois, stands a remarkable landmark known as the "Cross at the Crossroads".
This 200 foot cross is visible from miles away, serves as a symbol of faith and inspiration for travelers passing through the area.
This personally has been on my list of places I've wanted to stop at for a while when I visit my sister out in Missouri. This past week I had the chance to stop and it was beautiful.
Our dog Zoey also appreciated the walk too.
The cross is at the center with plaques with the 10 commandments around it. Still a work in progress, but a walking path with statues of Jesus' life and preaching are looped around the cross.
During the evening the reflection of the cross can be seen in the overlooking visitors center's window into the chapel. The Cross at the Crossroads is a volunteer ran effort and the visitor center is
staffed with volunteers.
John & Fran Schultz are the inspiration behind the Cross and wanted to bring the idea to their hometown of Effingham after seeing a similar cross in Texas. Construction of the cross began in 2001 and was
dedicated on September 16th, 2001.
